“Lisa, non ti avevo detto che puoi mangiare dolci solo dopo pranzo?”
“Giacomo, smettila di infastidire il cane!”
“Anna, metti via il telefono e fai i compiti!”
“Martino! Giovanni! Smettetela di litigare in questo istante!”
Ti suona familiare? Ascoltiamo cosa dice la Bibbia sull'autocontrollo:
Durante il tempo in cui Davide fuggiva da Saul, che voleva ucciderlo, molti uomini si unirono a Davide. Divenne il loro capo e lo ascoltarono, perché il Signore era con lui.
Non potevano stare in un posto troppo a lungo, perché c'era sempre qualcuno che faceva la spia a Saul. Ecco perché si spostavano costantemente. Una volta, quando Saul dovette andare a combattere contro i Filistei, Davide e gli uomini andarono a stare a Engedi. Era nella parte montuosa di un arido deserto. Davide e i suoi uomini prendevano l'acqua da una fontana nella valle dove i cervi venivano sempre a bere. C'era anche una caverna dove potevano ripararsi dal vento, il quale a volte soffiava così forte che i loro occhi e i loro vestiti si riempivano di polvere e sabbia.
Un giorno si erano nascosti di nuovo nella caverna per riposarsi un po'. Davide suonava la sua lira, cantando, “Come il cervo brama l'acqua, così la mia anima ti anela….” All'improvviso, le guardie all'ingresso della caverna arrivarono di corsa all'interno. “Nasconditi velocemente! Il re Saul sta arrivando.”
“Soltanto il re Saul da solo?” domandò Davide mentre riponeva velocemente la sua lira.
“Sì, ma alla fontana ci sono circa tremila soldati,” risposero le guardie.
Fecero appena in tempo a nascondersi dietro le rocce quando Saul entrò nella caverna. “C'è “C'è qualcuno qui dentro?” urlò Saul.
Tutti erano assolutamente immobili. Nessuno si mosse. Nelle ombre oscure della caverna, Davide e gli uomini osservavano attentamente ogni mossa di Saul. Non avevano intenzione di rimanere intrappolati nella caverna ed erano pronti ad andarsene in fretta se i soldati di Saul si fossero avvicinati.
Completamente ignaro del pericolo che si nascondeva nella caverna, Saul si tolse l'elmo e la corazza e li depose su una roccia vicina. Poi si spolverò i vestiti, bevve un sorso d'acqua dalla borraccia e si accovacciò.
“Psst! Davide!” sussurrò Abishai. “Oggi è il giorno in cui il Signore ha consegnato Saul nelle tue mani. Ora hai la possibilità di uccidere Saul e poi diventerai il re d'Israele.”
Silenziosamente Davide si alzò con una salda presa sulla sua spada affilata come un rasoio. Inseguì silenziosamente Saul attraverso la sabbia della caverna mentre il vento frusciava dolcemente attraverso l'ingresso. Saul, voltando le spalle a Davide, non sospettava nulla.
Quando Davide raggiunse Saul per ucciderlo, alzando la spada, la sua coscienza iniziò a tormentarlo: “Davide, vuoi uccidere per vendetta l'unto del Signore e poi diventare re tu stesso? Vuoi uccidere il padre del tuo migliore amico, Jonathan, che ami così tanto? Come potrai mai spiegarlo a Dio oppure a Jonathan? La Parola di Dio dice che non puoi commettere un omicidio, ma la vendetta è Sua.”
Immediatamente Davide cambiò idea e si limitò a tagliare un pezzo di stoffa della veste di Saul, l'afferrò e svanì rapidamente nell’ombra della caverna dove si nascondevano i suoi uomini. Disse loro, “Adesso la mia coscienza mi preoccupa seriamente. Possa il Signore impedirmi di uccidere il re, perché il Signore lo ha nominato ed è l’unto di Dio.”
“Ah no, Davide! Se non vuoi farlo, lo faremo noi!” dissero Joab e un sacco di altri uomini. “Quante volte ha cercato di ucciderti? Ha dato tua moglie a qualcun altro e da mesi ci dà la caccia come se fossimo bestie feroci!”
“No, assolutamente no!” Davide li proibì seriamente. “Il re Saul mi ha fatto un torto e non ne sono contento, ma è ancora l'unto del Signore! Ecco perché non dovete mettervi contro di lui. Dobbiamo essere pazienti e avere temperanza; il Signore dice che la vendetta è Sua e Lui stesso lo ripagherà per le sue azioni. Dio combatterà per noi e, secondo la Sua promessa, diventerò re al tempo stabilito! La via del Signore è sempre la migliore.”
Saul si alzò, indossò la corazza e l'elmo e uscì dalla caverna. All'improvviso, Davide balzò in piedi e corse dietro a Saul, gridando, “Mio signore, il re!”
Allarmato, Saul si fermò di botto. Quando si voltò, Davide si inchinò con la faccia a terra, cadde in ginocchio e disse, “Perché ascolti le persone che dicono che voglio ucciderti? Tu stesso hai visto che oggi Dio ti ha consegnato nelle mie mani. Tutti i miei uomini mi hanno detto di ucciderti, ma io ti ho risparmiato la vita, perché sei l'unto del Signore.”
Davide sollevò il pezzo di stoffa. “Guarda! Qui nella mia mano c'è un pezzo della tua veste. Quando l'ho tagliata, non ti ho ucciso. Non è una prova sufficiente che non voglio farti del male in alcun modo? Il Signore può ucciderti per quello che mi hai fatto, ma io non ti ucciderò mai. Il Signore deciderà chi ha ragione, io o te, e punirà chi ha torto!”
Saul rispose, “Sei proprio tu, figlio mio Davide?” Poi cominciò a gridare, “Sei un uomo migliore di me, perché mi hai fatto del bene quando volevo farti del male. Il Signore ti ricompensi perché mi hai risparmiato la vita.”
Tra le lacrime, Saul singhiozzò, “Ora so che diventerai re dopo di me. Promettimi che, quando sarai re, risparmierai la mia famiglia e i miei discendenti.”
Dopo che Davide glielo promise solennemente, Saul tornò a casa. Davide mantenne la sua promessa, ma il rimorso di Saul per aver tentato di uccidere Davide non durò a lungo. Poco dopo, era fuori a cercare di uccidere di nuovo Davide.
RICORDA:
Fermati e pensa quando sei tentato di sbagliare. Non è sempre facile, ma alla lunga la via del Signore è sempre la migliore.

LO SAPEVATE?
I bambini che hanno imparato l'autocontrollo fin dalla tenera età di solito diventano adulti di successo.
UN VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Il frutto dello Spirito invece è amore, gioia, pace,
pazienza, benevolenza, bontà, fedeltà, mansuetudine,
autocontrollo; contro queste cose non c'è legge”
(Galati 5:22-23).
DELLE ALTERNATIVE AL VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Dio infatti ci ha dato uno spirito non di timidezza, ma di forza,
di amore e di autocontrollo”
(2 Timoteo 1:7).
“Chi è lento all'ira vale piò del prode guerriero;
chi ha autocontrollo vale più di chi espugna città”
(Proverbi 16:32).
“Esorta similmente i giovani ad essere moderati”
(Tito 2:6).
“La fine di tutte le cose è vicina; siate dunque
moderati e sobri per dedicarvi alla preghiera”
(1 Pietro 4:7).
“Per amore del mio nome io rinvierò la mia ira,
e per amor della mia gloria io mi freno
per non sterminarti” (Isaia 48:9)
APPLICAZIONE PRATICA
Cosa faresti se giocando con i tuoi amici, uno di loro ti facesse arrabbiare, schiaffeggiandoti, mordendoti o prendendoti a calci? Lo schiaffeggeresti, lo morderesti o gli restituiresti i calci? È così che dovresti comportarti? Cosa vorrebbe Gesù che tu facessi?
Voglio che tu pensi ad alcune cose che ti piace fare che non sempre ti fanno bene. Ad esempio, ti potrebbe piacere rimpinzarti di snack e dolci invece di mangiare a tavola, o sederti tutto il giorno a guardare film, giocare ai videogiochi o giocare con il telefono invece di uscire all'aperto per prendere il sole e fare esercizio. Cosa ti aiuterebbe a fare la cosa giusta? Pensare a ciò che Gesù farebbe ti aiuterebbe a decidere?
Ora pensa a cose che sai che dovresti fare ma che non sempre hai voglia di fare, cose come i compiti, rifare il letto o lavarti i denti. Perché è bello fare queste cos?
Che ne pensi sul leggere la Bibbia e pregare? Pensi che ci voglia autocontrollo per pregare e leggere la Bibbia ogni giorno? Riesci a pensare a una volta che Gesù ha usato l'autocontrollo quando era qui sulla Terra?
[Dopo la discussione:] Nella storia di oggi, Davide poteva scegliere se cedere alla tentazione e uccidere Saul o fare ciò che Dio aveva comandato e lasciarlo vivere. Mostrò un grande autocontrollo e Dio lo ricompensò facendolo re d'Israele dopo la morte di Saul.
Quando sei tentato di perdere l'autocontrollo, ci sono molte cose che puoi fare. La prossima volta che succede, prova ad andartene o pensa a un versetto biblico prima di fare qualsiasi cosa e, se non conosci un versetto biblico, conta fino a dieci. Soprattutto, chiedi aiuto a Gesù in silenzio e confida in Lui per aiutarti a fare la cosa giusta.
È molto più difficile riconquistare un amico che fare qualcosa di stupido per perderne uno. Ti sei arrabbiato così tanto da aver perso la pazienza con qualcuno? Hai bisogno di chiedere a qualcuno di perdonarti? Fallo oggi in modo che Dio possa portare guarigione in entrambe le vostre vite. Dio mostra molto autocontrollo nei nostri confronti e noi dovremmo fare lo stesso con gli altri.
PREGHIAMO

Padre Celeste, aiutaci a usare l'autocontrollo
e pensare sempre alle conseguenze di quello
che facciamo. Insegnaci ad aspettare con pazienza
per ricevere dei premi. Nel nome di Gesù. Amen.
