Scoraggiata, Erica si era seduta sugli spalti e guardava i suoi compagni di squadra della Green School giocare a hockey contro la Red School. Era molto triste perché lei non faceva parte della squadra, sebbene precedentemente avesse segnato parecchi gol per la sua scuola.
Durante le vacanze scolastiche, i bulli del quartiere le avevano rotto la mazza da hockey. I suoi genitori non avevano abbastanza soldi per comprarle un nuovo bastone, quindi era stata costretta a smettere di giocare a hockey.
“Evvai! Caterina ha segnato di nuovo un gol!!” Sospirò e pensò a quello che era successo a scuola il giorno prima. Caterina le aveva chiesto perché non giocasse più a hockey, ma Erica l'aveva rimproverata e si era allontanata scontrosa. Sapeva di aver fatto del male a Caterina, ma non voleva che i suoi compagni di squadra sapessero che la sua famiglia era povera e che i suoi genitori non potevano permettersi una nuova mazza da hockey. In realtà, Erica si sentiva molto male e in colpa per questo, ma non sapeva cos'altro fare.
“Green, Green, Green School!” i bambini sugli spalti acclamarono a gran voce quando la squadra di hockey femminile della Green School vinse la partita. Nemmeno la vittoria era riuscita a far felice Erica. Osservò Caterina e la squadra correre verso di lei. “Uh-uh! Non c'è via d'uscita ora. Saranno sicuramente cattivi con me, come io sono stata cattiva con loro ieri,” pensò preoccupata.
Con un grande sorriso gentile sul viso, Caterina si fermò davanti a Erica. “Erica, vorrei davvero darti qualcosa. Ecco la mazza da hockey che ha segnato il gol della vittoria oggi. Se non ti dispiace, voglio davvero dartela. Ne ho un'altra a casa. Non è certamente nuova, ma per favore la accetteresti da me?”
Per un momento Erica rimase sbalordita, ma prima sentì di dover dire la verità e disse, “Caterina, mi dispiace molto di essere stata così cattiva con te ieri! Per favore, puoi perdonarmi?”
“Certo!” disse Caterina. “Poiché Gesù è stato così gentile da perdonarmi per tutti i miei torti, anche io posso perdonare te!” Tutti gli altri compagni di squadra furono d'accordo.
“Allora accetterò volentieri questa mazza da hockey! Hai reso felice la mia giornata. Congratulazioni per la tua grande vittoria!” disse Erica con un sorriso enorme.
Una donna bella e saggia di Maon, di nome Abigail, stava lavorando sodo per preparare una grande festa per suo marito e i suoi amici per quella sera. Lei e le sue ancelle cuocevano il pane, friggevano il grano, facevano grappoli di uva passa e focacce di fichi, mentre i suoi servi preparavano la carne. Sarebbe stata una festa degna di un re.
Suo marito, Nabal, non era né bello né saggio, ma era molto ricco e aveva tremila pecore e mille capre. Ogni anno, quando Nabal tosava le sue pecore sul monte Carmel, i mercanti di lana venivano da ogni parte per comprare la lana da lui, facendolo diventare ancora più ricco.
In lontananza, Abigail notò improvvisamente una nuvoletta di polvere che veniva verso di loro. “Chi potrebbe essere?” si chiese. “Nabal è nel campo a controllare la tosatura delle sue pecore e non tornerà a casa fino a stasera. Spero solo che sia una buona notizia!”
Mentre Abigail tirava fuori altre pagnotte dal forno, arrivò un messaggero trafelato. “Portagli dell'acqua, un pezzo di pane e un po' di frutta,” ordinò a una delle sue ancelle.
Il messaggero era uno dei servitori di Nabal. “Mia signora,” ansimò. “Mia signora! Siamo in grossi guai!”
“Calmati, giovanotto. Riprendi fiato e raccontami cos'è successo,” gli disse Abigail con sollecitudine.
Lui lee disse, “Mentre stavamo pascendo le pecore qui a Carmel, avevamo molta paura dei ladri di bestiame. Tuttavia, Davide e i suoi uomini sono stati veramente gentili. Sono rimasti con noi tutto il tempo, proteggendoci e vegliando su di noi. Erano come un muro intorno a noi giorno e notte. Non ci hanno insultato e non ci hanno rubato nulla.”
Il messaggero si asciugò il sudore dalla fronte. “Quando Nabal condusse i tosatori per tosare le pecore, Davide gli mandò dieci uomini per salutarlo. Essi salutarono amichevolmente Nabal e gli augurarono ogni bene. Poi chiesero a Nabal se volesse dare loro alcune delle sue provviste di cibo. Tu stessa sai che il cibo scarseggia in questa terra arida e Davide e i suoi uomini meritavano di ricevere qualcosa da Nabal per tutto il bene che avevano fatto per lui.”
Un'espressione accigliata offuscò il viso del messaggero. “Ma Nabal era molto ostile. Inveì contro Davide e i suoi uomini, insultandoli e rifiutandosi categoricamente di dare loro qualsiasi cosa, nemmeno acqua, o pane, o carne. Niente!”
“Oh no! E poi che è successo?” chiese Abigail con gli occhi spalancati.
Il giovane proseguì con uno sguardo turbato sul volto, “Quando gli uomini di Davide gli riferirono quello che aveva detto Nabal, si infuriò immediatamente perché Nabal li stava trattando male per tutto il bene che avevano fatto per lui. Davide ordinò a quattrocento dei suoi uomini di cingere le spade e di andare a combattere contro Nabal e noi suoi servi. Duecento dei suoi uomini rimasero con gli animali da soma per proteggerli.”
Il messaggero scosse ansiosamente la testa. “Nabal è così testardo che pensa di poter fare ciò che vuole e trattare male le persone senza conseguenze. Pensa che sconfiggeremo Davide, ma non siamo soldati. Siamo spaventati.” Supplicò, “Mia signora, devi fare qualcosa; altrimenti, entro domani saremo tutti morti.”
Immediatamente, Abigail seppe cosa fare. Prese duecento pani, due otri di vino, cinque misure di grano fritto, cento grappoli di uva passa, duecento focacce di fichi, cinque pecore macellate e caricò il tutto sugli asini. Si rivolse al giovane messaggero e disse, “Portaci da Davide.”
Intanto aveva mandato avanti i suoi servi con gli asini carichi e disse loro, “Andate! Vi seguirò da vicino.” Alle sue ancelle disse, “Non dite niente a Nabal,” poi salì sul suo asino e scese dalla montagna. Era in un vallone quando Davide e i suoi uomini si imbatterono improvvisamente in loro.
Quando Abigail lo vide, riconobbe immediatamente Davide dal suo bell'aspetto rubicondo. Smontò rapidamente dall’asino e cadde ai suoi piedi e disse, “Prenditela con me, mio signore, ma per favore ascolta quello che voglio dire. Nabal è uno sciocco, proprio come significa il suo nome e il Signore lo giudicherà. Per favore accetta questo regalo da parte mia e non permettere che tutti noi siamo puniti per l'errore di Nabal.”
Quando Davide vide la bella donna che implorava pietà davanti a lui, la sua rabbia si placò immediatamente. Rimase molto colpito da Abigail, specialmente quando disse, “So che il Signore ti protegge da tutti i tuoi nemici e che ti vendicherà contro di loro. So anche che un giorno diventerai re d'Israele. Allora vorrai avere la coscienza pulita e non la coscienza sporca di un assassino. Quando sarai re, per favore pensa a me e fammi del bene.”
David le rispose, “Grazie mille per i tuoi regali. Ringrazio Dio di averti mandato qui oggi per impedirmi di fare del male e cercare vendetta. Torna a casa in pace, senza aver paura che io uccida tuo marito.”
Abigail si alzò molto contenta e sollevata, quindi tornò a casa. Quando arrivò a casa, scoperse che suo marito stava banchettando con tutti i suoi uomini. Era ubriaco fradicio, perciò quella sera lei non gli disse nulla di quello che aveva fatto.
Fu solo il giorno dopo che gli raccontò delle provviste di cibo che aveva dato a Davide. Nabal si arrabbiò così tanto che ebbe subito un ictus e rimase paralizzato. Per dieci giorni non riuscì a muoversi, poi ebbe un altro attacco e morì.
Quando Davide seppe che Nabal era morto, si preoccupò per Abigail. Proprio come lei aveva chiesto, lui pensò a lei e poi mandò dei messaggeri per chiederle di sposarlo. Fu molto contenta e subito si preparò, montò sul suo asino, prese con sé cinque ancelle e andò da Davide dove divenne sua moglie.
RICORDA:
Quando trovi difficile essere gentile con qualcun altro, devi ricordare la grande gentilezza di Gesù verso di te.
RIFLETTI!
1. Cosa stava preparando Abigail per il banchetto di Nabal? Nomina almeno un piatto.
2. In che modo Davide ei suoi uomini furono gentili con i servitori di Nabal?
3. Nabal ricambiò la loro gentilezza?
4. Chi fece cambiare idea a Davide sull'attaccare e uccidere Nabal e fare il male?
5. In che modo Abigail convinse Davide a non vendicarsi di Nabal?
UN VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Il frutto dello Spirito invece è amore, gioia, pace,
pazienza, benevolenza, bontà,
fedeltà, mansuetudine, autocontrollo:
contro queste cose non c'è legge” (Galati 5:22-23).
UNA ALTERNATIVA AL VERSETTO DA IMPARARE
“Siate invece benevoli e misericordiosi gli
uni verso gli altri, perdonandovi a vicenda,
come anche Dio vi ha perdonati in Cristo”
(Efesini 4:32).
APPLICAZIONE PRATICA
Per capire di più sulla gentilezza e la dolcezza, prenditi del tempo per studiare le buone maniere e imparare a essere educato. Essere un gentiluomo o una gentildonna è molto più che indossare abiti ben curati. Si tratta di far sentire meglio con sé stesse le persone intorno a te. Si tratta di dare grazia agli altri quando serve e saper difendere coloro che non possono farlo da soli.
Sei stato scortese con un fratello, un genitore, un amico o un'altra persona? C'era un motivo per cui ti sei comportato in quel modo? È giunto il momento di cambiare idea, chiedere perdono ed essere gentile. Dio desidera ardentemente aiutarti in questo, se solo ti fermerai e glielo chiederai. Elenca alcuni modi per essere gentile con gli altri.
[Dopo la discussione:] Proprio come Abigail fu gentile con Davide, Dio vuole che tu tratti gli altri con gentilezza, inondandoli di gentilezza. Gesù ti ha mostrato vera gentilezza quando ha dato sé stesso come tuo Salvatore e ti ha scelto per diventare suo figlio. Come un bambino che ama suo padre e lo imita, Dio vuole che tu lo ami e lo imiti mostrando gentilmente dolcezza ai tuoi genitori, fratelli, familiari, amici e coloro che Dio manda nella tua vita. Lascia che la tua dolce gentilezza risplenda come una luce brillante in questo mondo oscuro.
