“Beatrice, c'è una lettera per te,” urlò Giorgio mentre entrava in casa, lasciando che la porta a zanzariera sbattesse dietro di lui.
Beatrice saltellava su e giù, battendo le mani gioiosamente. Aspettava da tempo che arrivasse la lettera della nonna. Aprì con cura la busta e sbirciò all'interno prima di togliere la lettera. La nonna spesso racchiudeva piccoli doni e Beatrice voleva essere sicura di non perdere nulla.
Non veniva mai delusa dalle lettere della nonna, anche se all'interno non c'era un regalo. Amava teneramente sua nonna e non vedeva l'ora di leggere le storie divertenti che la nonna scriveva sui suoi animali da fattoria. Dopo aver letto l'intera lettera, Beatrice la piegò, la ripose nella busta, quindi la mise nella sua scatola speciale per tenerla al sicuro, insieme agli altri suoi tesori.
Paolo era un grande missionario e insegnante della Bibbia. Era disprezzato dalla maggior parte dei leader nei templi ebraici perché predicava che Gesù Cristo era il Figlio di Dio e poteva perdonare i peccati. Paolo insegnò anche che tutti potevano amare Dio e osservare i suoi comandamenti, il che fece arrabbiare ancora di più i capi, perché pensavano che solo gli ebrei potessero adorare il vero Dio. Ovunque andasse Paolo, i capi ebrei gli causavano problemi. Finì in prigione in più di un'occasione per aver predicato di Gesù.
Anche se si trovava in una cella fredda e buia, a volte affamato e a volte persino incatenato alle sue guardie carcerarie, Paolo non perdeva tempo tenendo il broncio, lamentandosi o lagnandosi. Continuava a predicare a tutti coloro i quali volevano ascoltare che Gesù Cristo era il Figlio di Dio e poteva perdonare i loro peccati. Anche alcune delle guardie più meschine che lo avevano picchiato crudelmente, scelsero di diventare cristiane a motivo della predicazione di Paolo e della vita devota che conduceva.
I giorni passavano e Paolo iniziò a pensare ai tanti amici che si era fatto in così tante città e paesi diversi in tutta Europa e in Asia. I suoi amici in Galazia erano stati particolarmente gentili con lui quando era malato e gli mancavano molto. Non solo gli avevano mostrato gentilezza, ma avevano anche accettato con gioia i suoi insegnamenti su Gesù. Poiché gli era impossibile visitare i suoi amici e non c'era molto da fare in carcere, decise di scrivere loro una lettera.
Questa cominciava più o meno come qualsiasi altra lettera, con un saluto ai suoi amici e l'augurio per loro di ogni bene, ma di certo non è finita per essere una normale lettera di tutti i giorni!
Paolo era un predicatore del vangelo di Cristo e anche nelle sue lettere non poteva fare a meno di predicare e insegnare su Gesù. Paolo aveva così tanto da dire ai suoi amici; continuava a scrivere e scrivere. La lettera diventava sempre più lunga. Quando finalmente ebbe finito, la lettera era molto lunga; si era trasformata in un libro con sei capitoli!
Quando Paolo fu convinto che la lettera contenesse tutto ciò che voleva dire ai suoi amici, la sigillò con cura e trovò un messaggero disposto a recarsi in Galazia per consegnarla.
I suoi amici furono entusiasti di ricevere la lettera e chiamarono tutti quelli che conoscevano. La lessero attentamente più e più volte e fecero del loro meglio per seguire gli insegnamenti di Paolo su come essere simili a Gesù. Si presero molta cura della lettera perché era molto preziosa per loro.
Nel quinto capitolo della lettera, Paolo voleva che i suoi amici imparassero che le persone che sono cristiane — il che significa seguaci di Gesù Cristo — hanno caratteristiche diverse rispetto alle persone che non si preoccupano di Gesù e non vogliono vivere una vita devota. Paolo chiamò queste caratteristiche frutto e spiegò che è facile dire quali persone amano Gesù e quali no a causa del frutto che mostrano nella loro vita quotidiana.
Aveva elencato alcuni dei frutti di una persona empia, come la menzogna, l'odio, l'invidia, l'ubriachezza, l'omicidio e molte altre caratteristiche malvage. Poi aveva elencato il frutto di una persona che segue gli insegnamenti di Gesù:
“Ma il frutto dello Spirito è amore, gioia, pace, pazienza, mansuetudine, bontà, fede, mansuetudine, temperanza: contro di essi non c'è legge.”
La lettera che Paolo scrisse ai suoi cari amici in Galazia, quasi 2000 anni fa, è stata copiata più e più volte e tradotta in molte lingue, compresa la nostra. Puoi persino leggere questa lettera da solo! È nella seconda parte della vostra Bibbia, che si chiama Nuovo Testamento, e la lettera è conosciuta come il Libro dei Galati.
Che privilegio avere questo tesoro che ci è stato tramandato nei secoli! È altrettanto importante per noi conoscere il frutto dello Spirito e come essere simili a Gesù, proprio come lo fu per gli amici di Paolo quando lessero la lettera per la prima volta.

UN VERSO DA IMPARARE
“Il frutto dello Spirito invece è amore, gioia, pace,
pazienza, benevolenza, bontà, fedeltà, mansuetudine,
autocontrollo; contro queste cose non c'è legge”
(Galati 5:22-23).
APPLICAZIONE PRATICA
Ti piace ricevere lettere e messaggi o cartoline da familiari, amici o persone a cui tieni? Che tipo di lettere ti piacciono di più e da chi ti piace riceverle? E tu? Ti piace inviare lettere e messaggi o cartoline alle persone che ami?
[Dopo la discussione:] Dio ha usato Paolo per scrivere lettere ai credenti perché sia Dio che Paolo si preoccupavano profondamente per loro. In un'altra lettera di Paolo, dice che se credi in Gesù e fai le cose che Lui vuole che tu faccia, come portare il frutto dello Spirito, diventi una Sua lettera vivente, scritta nel tuo cuore, per le persone tutte intorno a te. Gli altri leggono in te di Gesù quando ti comporti come farebbe Gesù. Ti piacerebbe essere una lettera vivente in modo che altri possano leggere le benedizioni e le cose buone che Dio dà? Chiedi tutto ciò a Dio ora e ringrazialo per questo.

Caro Dio, grazie per aver mandato Gesù per essere il nostro
più grande esempio su come vivere. Grazie per Paolo,
che ha scritto molti libri della Bibbia che ci dicono come fare
per essere più simili a Gesù. Aiutami a vivere come una
lettera del tuo amore, gioia, pace, pazienza, gentilezza,
bontà, fedeltà, mansuetudine e dominio di sé.
Nel nome di Gesù. Amen.
