Preoccupato per un brufolo

“Aaargh!”urlò Luca mentre era chinato sul catino. “Che grosso! E’ enorme! …Ed è sul mio viso!” Si ritrasse con un balzo dall’acqua in preda al panico. “No, non di nuovo, non un altro.” Con fare esitante si riavvicinò al catino. Nel riflesso dell’acqua, Luca vide una grossa macchia rossa sulla punta del naso. Era un altro brufolo, rosseggiante come un incendio. Provò a schiacciarlo sperando di farlo scoppiare, ma sentì invece soltanto una dolorosissima fitta all’interno della narice. Il brufolo non era ancora maturo ed avrebbe dovuto sopportarlo per almeno un giorno ancora.
Si sentì venir meno al pensiero di tutte le beffe che avrebbe dovuto subire; e, per giunta, suo padre gli aveva chiesto di andare al lago a prendere del pesce fresco, così Luca non poteva nemmeno nascondersi a letto fino a che non fosse scoppiato.
Tutto ciò che poteva sperare era di arrivare di soppiatto e augurarsi che nessuno lo riconoscesse.
Uscì in strada furtivamente.
Nella calma del primo mattino, sfrecciò di porta in porta, accucciandosi dietro grosse anfore e infilandosi sotto dei carretti ogniqualvolta qualcuno entrava nella strada. Si muoveva rapidamente attraverso viuzze secondarie, a scatti, correndo lungo le strette stradine e poi nascondendosi finché non era sicuro di avere via libera.
Aveva quasi raggiunto il margine della città, quando la sua concentrazione diminuì e si ritrovò a correre incontro ad un…qualcosa che veniva dalla direzione opposta.
In un primo momento Luca non aveva idea di cosa stava trovandosi di fronte. Poteva soltanto dire che puzzava come del pesce che stava marcendo sul fondo di una barca.
Aveva due gambe e due braccia come un uomo ma la sua carne era tutta spaccata e spellata. Le vesciche che spurgavano sul suo viso paralizzarono Luca, che restò impietrito dall’orrore.
Si rese conto che non si trattava di un mostro uscito dal fondo del lago, ma di un lebbroso. Era un essere umano il cui corpo in putrefazione andava disfacendosi mentre era ancora in vita.
Poté sentire le giunture dell’uomo scricchiolare mentre il lebbroso gli passava lentamente vicino.
Luca rimase senza fiato e fece un balzo all’indietro nella penombra! Adesso non si vergognava più del suo brufolo. Era stato a pochi centimetri da un lebbroso ed aveva visto quanto devastante fosse la lebbra. Poi, prima che potesse rifletterci su ulteriormente, un altro uomo entrò nella strada più avanti. Luca stette a guardare mentre il lebbroso si affrettava verso l’uomo, gettandosi poi ai suoi piedi con la faccia a terra.
Luca si aspettava che l’uomo si allontanasse alla svelta dal ripugnante lebbroso, ma questi non lo fece. I due uomini si parlarono, poi, con grande stupore di Luca, l’uomo si chinò e toccò il lebbroso.
“Ecco! Adesso è fritto!” pensò Luca. “Diventerà lebbroso anche lui prima della fine della settimana.”
Dopo qualche istante, l’uomo lasciò la strada ed il lebbroso si girò per ritornare in direzione di Luca, ma non più trascinandosi dolorosamente come prima. Ora saltava e balzellava gridando, “Lode al Signore!”
Mentre il lebbroso gli passava accanto, Luca poté vedere perché. Miracolosamente, la sua lebbra era stata guarita, la sua pelle in disfacimento era stata rinnovata ed era liscia, perfino i peli sulle braccia e sulle gambe erano ricomparsi, folti e scuri. Be’, con ancora i suoi vecchi stracci addosso sembrava ancora piuttosto trasandato, ma Luca era lo stesso fortemente impressionato.
Mentre passava di corsa, l’uomo sorrise e lo salutò, scomparendo poi in una stradina laterale.
Luca uscì dalla penombra. Non sentiva più il bisogno di nascondersi. Dopo tutto, cos’erano dei brufoli in confronto alla lebbra, e, inoltre, Luca doveva risolvere un mistero. Voleva sapere più d’ogni altra cosa chi era l’uomo che poteva guarire la lebbra. S’incamminò determinato a scoprirlo.
